Rams pick three trench players in The Draft Wire’s latest mock
Just to get ahead of it, this mock was done before the big trade went down on Thursday afternoon between the Rams and Texans so this does not reflect the extra second-pick that was acquired.
Prior to free agency the Rams were in need of help along both sides of the trenches. Following the initial loss of Michael Brockers and new addition of A’Shawn Robinson, the Rams could still have used some depth. But Brockers came back to the Rams after his Baltimore deal fell through and I’d say they’re sitting pretty along the interior at the moment.
However, The Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling still believes the Rams could benefit from more interior help. Here are the picks:
Pick 52 - Neville Gallimore, DT, Oklahoma
Gallimore came into the 2019 season being touted as one of the “freakest” athletes in college football with reports saying he can bench press over 500 pounds and squat over 800.
On top of that, the guy ran a sub 4.80 forty at 300+ pounds. He’s most-rightfully earned the title of “freaky Latest Baltimore News Wire.”
Gallimore’s breakout season came in 2018 when he totaled 50 total stops, five tackles-for-loss, and three sacks with two forced fumbles. As a senior, he tallied just 29 total tackles but increased his tackles-for-loss to 7.5 and his sacks to four while maintaining his pair of forced fumbles.
The participant in this year’s Senior Bowl was once seen as a sure-fire first-round pick. While he may still find himself going that high, the consensus is he’s likely to be off the board somewhere in the second.
Again, I’m not so sure how smart of a pick this is, especially with Brockers being back for three years, Aaron Donald here for life, and Robinson newly inked for the immediate future.
Pick 84 - Hakeem Adeniji, OL, Kansas
Adeniji is one of the top tackle prospects that is expected to make a transition inside to guard, even with 48 total starts at tackle under his belt. At 6’4 and 305 pounds, Adeniji possesses ample mass and athleticism that can utilized most efficiently if he were to have help on either side of him.
His combine performance was one of the better performances among the offensive lineman, testing well across the board. His 5.17 forty time was so-so, but his 34-inch vertical was among the top marks.
Adeniji ended his Jayhawk career with two Big 12 honorable mention selections and one Second-Team All-Big 12 nod from his junior season in 2018 Press Release Distribution Service.
Pick 107 - Jordan Elliott, DT, Missouri
Regardless of the amount of defensive tackles the Rams would technically have at this point, grabbing Elliott at this point in the draft would be one of the biggest steals of the entire event. I’ve seen Elliott go as high as the late first-round in recent days and that’s not surprising as he was one of Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded interior defensive linemen during the 2019 season.
After transferring from Texas and sitting out the 2017 season, Elliott stepped into a rotational role. He still managed to be disruptive, totaling eight tackles-for-loss and three sacks. As a full-time starter this past season, Elliott totaled 44 stops, 8.5 tackles-for-loss, and 2.5 sacks with three pass deflections.
Elliott’s got one of the quickest first steps off the line of scrimmage which helps him cause havoc, regardless of if it winds up as a win in the box score. He does an excellent job of keeping his shoulders square to the LOS and this allows him to continuously impede the path of ball-carriers.
If the Rams were to really take another defensive tackle before this pick, adding another would be absolutely bonkers.
